Have you ever seen a commercial for a personal trainer or the latest, greatest, fabulous equipment in a members’ gym with smiling, sweaty people in a row, jumping and pumping to fun, upbeat, retro music, and suddenly felt a great desire to “get in shape?”

Our typical knee-jerk reaction when viewing images of people with rock-hard abs and sleek thighs, stretching and crunching by a beautiful seashore is think to ourselves, “I’d be in great shape, too, if I could go there to exercise each morning!”

I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t take lots of money, or fancy spas or vacations to exotic places and lifetime memberships to high-end, trendy gymnasiums to develop an overall state of good health and great physical shape.

Half the battle of getting in shape is making up your mind to do it! There are ways to lose weight, tone muscles, and improve your overall state of good health right in your own backyard!

Remember these key categories as you design your customized plan to get fit for free:

*Eating habits/Food choices
*Energy-building/Joyful attitude
*Physical Fitness/Weight Loss
*Overall Sense of Spiritual, Emotional, Intellectual, Physical Well-being

Obviously, you have to eat. Everyday. More than once a day. However, the trick is to become focused, diligent, willing, and intentional in your eating habits! Start by maintaining a steady glucose level, staying well-hydrated (with water, not soda!) and choosing healthy foods over “comfort” foods. Use this simple mantra to keep yourself on track: “Eat less, move more!”

A thankful heart is a joyful heart. What has that got to do with getting in shape? Everything! An “attitude of gratitude” does wonders for the body! (Mind over matter, and all that good stuff!) You can boost energy by:

*Learning to breathe properly (breathing in a state of rest should use the diaphragm not the chest)
*Refreshing yourself by splashing water on your face (take a nice long sniff of some peppermint essential oil while you’re at it!)
*Balancing sleep/activity/rest/work (all in moderation)
*Laughing often (you’d be amazed at the healthful benefits of laughter)

Now, it’s time to “get physical!” Let’s cut to the chase with ways to get fit for free:

*Walk laps around your little ones while they play in the yard
*Make exercise a daily family activity (Break out the jump ropes and hula hoops!)

*Make Use of Netflix (lots of exercise video streaming available!)
*Take five minutes, do 10 reps (Throughout the day, take small breaks and do 10 of something…push-ups, crunches, high knee lifts, run in place, jumping jacks, etc…)By doing this five times a day, you’ll have done 50 reps!
*Start an exercise group with your friends (Rotate houses if you don’t want to host all the time. It’s always fun to get fit with pals around and it helps to be accountable to others who share your fitness goals.)

Getting physically fit, for free, is wonderful. Yet, it is only part of the whole picture. For you to enjoy good health, overall, you must remember to nurture your spiritual, emotional, and intellectual well-being, as well as your physical body. Decide today, that you are not going to let lack of funds, lack of time, lack of space, or lack of knowledge keep you from getting in shape!
