Must-Read Books for Personal Development

Who doesn’t want a better life? To improve your life or your situation, you must improve yourself. A journey of personal development will not only make you a better person, it will improve every aspect of your life and have positive impacts on all those around you.

These days, there seems to be a stigma surrounding personal development, or self-help. The common perception is that a person who’s into this sort of thing must be a hot mess and obviously going through some stuff. But, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Truth is, everyone is a hot mess. The writers here at Hot Mess Anonymous have got your back! Just because you’re reading a self-help book doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. It means you’ve made a choice to invest in yourself.

Personal development is about upgrading who you are as a person. I try to start each day by asking this question: What is the greatest version of myself that I can be today? Each day is a blessing, and another opportunity to be better. 

If you want to improve your life, start by reading. There are literally thousands of personal development/self-help books out there, and trying to decide on the right book can be a bit overwhelming, so where do you begin?

To get you started, I’ve narrowed it down to my three favorite books. These are the most impactful books that I’ve encountered during my journey of personal development.

The Miracle Morning: The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Change Your Life Before 8 AM by Hal Elrod

The significance of a morning routine is the main focus of this book. From Bill Gates to Barack Obama, the one thing the vast majority of successful people have in common is a morning routine. If you’re like me, getting up early is a struggle. No one wants to wake up at the crack of dawn and leave a warm, comfy bed. However, starting your day the correct way is a major key to success and fulfillment.

In this book, Hal Elrod shares intimate details about his near-death experience, recovery, and the remarkable lessons learned along the way. He outlines in detail a 6-step morning routine that will undoubtedly change your life. Hal gives the reader actionable steps that can be immediately implemented. Soon after reading this book, I started the Miracle Morning routine and the results were astounding. Without question, this is a must-read.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo

Typically, you wouldn’t think a fiction book would be part of the personal development category, but here we are. This book is an inspirational masterpiece and widely considered one of the greatest books of all time. The Alchemist is centered around a young Spanish shepherd boy, Santiago, who has a recurring dream about a treasure underneath the pyramids in Egypt.

Santiago embarks on a transformational journey to the pyramids, crossing the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara Desert, to accomplish his “Personal Legend”. This book is about so much more than the plot, though. The author raises insightful ideas about personal destiny and rising above failure.

An added bonus is that this book is an incredibly easy read and not terribly long, making it perfect for those who are just beginning their personal development adventure. This is one book that will not only captivate you, it will inspire you to chase your dreams.

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

If you were going to read only one personal development book in your life, this should be it. Known as the bible of self-help, this book was published in 1937 and is still very much relevant today. To date, over 70 million copies of this timeless classic have been sold.

Napoleon Hill spent nearly 20 years researching and analyzing hundreds of wealthy and successful men to come up with this masterpiece. According to Hill and the many successful people he interviewed, reaching your desired goals starts with consciously tapping into the subconscious mind, and this book explains how to do that in detail. As you think, so shall you be.

The book revolves around 13 success principles that Hill came up with after examining the lives of the most successful people in the world. This book will add tremendous value to your life and, in my opinion, should be read at least once every year.

Personal development is a journey, a lifelong process. Life is about change. You will change, your circumstances will change, your life will change. It’s inevitable. Change is the only consistent thing in life.

Since you’re going to change, why not change for the better? If you want to start living an impactful and purposeful life, these books are a great place to start. It costs nothing to believe in yourself, but it will cost you everything if you don’t.
